Migori County: Agricultural Hub and Trade Gateway in Southwestern Kenya
Last updated on October 13th, 2024
Migori County is located in southwestern Kenya, bordering Lake Victoria to the west and neighbouring Tanzania to the south. It spans approximately 2,596.5 square kilometers, with a landscape that ranges from rolling hills to low-lying areas near the lake. The county’s rich agricultural environment supports the production of crops such as sugarcane, maize, and tobacco, contributing to its economic growth. Migori town serves as the administrative and commercial hub, playing a central role in governance and trade activities within the region.
Migori County is administratively divided into ten sub-counties, which ensure effective governance and resource management. These sub-counties are Rongo, Awendo, Suna East, Suna West, Uriri, Nyatike, Kuria East, Kuria West, Ntimaru, and Mabera. Each sub-county has distinct geographical and socio-economic features, contributing to the overall development of the county. The presence of Lake Victoria and the proximity to Tanzania support cross-border trade and fishing, which are essential for the local economy.
The task of accurately mapping Migori County’s varied terrain and administrative divisions has greatly benefited from the expertise of surveyor M.N Omosa. His proficiency in geodetic surveying has been crucial, providing precise maps that reflect the county’s topography and boundaries with high fidelity.
