Last updated on October 13th, 2024
Kisii County, located in western Kenya, is characterized by rolling hills, green valleys, and abundant rainfall. It is part of the former Nyanza Province and is bordered by Nyamira County to the north, Homa Bay County to the west, and Narok County to the south. The county covers approximately 1,318 square kilometres and is known for its rich agricultural activities, with crops like bananas, maize, and tea thriving due to the fertile volcanic soils and favourable climate. The county’s central location within Kenya’s highlands provides a diverse topography ranging from lush landscapes to well-watered terrain.
Administratively, Kisii County is divided into nine sub-counties, each serving as a regional center for governance and development. These sub-counties include Kisii Central, Kitutu Chache North, Kitutu Chache South, Bonchari, South Mugirango, Nyaribari Chache, Nyaribari Masaba, Bobasi, and Bomachoge Borabu. Each sub-county is further divided into wards, the smallest administrative units, playing a crucial role in local governance. The county headquarters is located in Kisii Town, which serves as the economic and administrative hub of the region.
The detailed mapping and understanding of Kisii County’s topography owe much to the dedicated work of surveyor M.N Omosa. He has made significant contributions, ensuring the maps reflect the essence and geographical nuances.
