Unveiling the Diverse Landscape of Trans Nzoia County

Last updated on November 4th, 2024

Trans Nzoia County, located in Western Kenya, is a vibrant region known for its fertile soils, rich agricultural activities, and diverse cultural heritage. The Trans Nzoia County map shows an area strategically positioned between Nzoia River and Mount Elgon, with the Cherangany Hills imposing a backdrop of scenic beauty.

The Trans Nzoia County is ranked 37th in Kenya Counties’ size ranking. It borders Bungoma County to the West, Uasin Gishu County and Kakamega County to the South, Elgeyo-Marakwet County to the East, West Pokot to the North and the Republic of Uganda to the Northwest.

The County’s administrative map is divided into several sub-counties, each with its unique characteristics and attractions.

  • Kiminini Sub-County is celebrated for its serene environment and the historic Kitale Museum, which offers insights into the rich history and culture of the region. The museum is a focal point for tourists interested in the colonial past and Indigenous artefacts. Kitale Museum also hosts several snake species in addition to large crocodile pits.
  • Saboti Sub-County encompasses the bustling town of Kitale, the economic hub of the County. Here, visitors can experience some magic in the Mount Elgon National Park. Deep in the mountain, Elephants and Buffalos regularly gather at night in the caves. 200 metres inside Kitum cave, the animals lick salt from the cave walls. The area is also known for the Saiwa Swamp National Park, a three square kilometres (3km2) haven for the rare Sitatunga antelope (Tragelaphus spekii).
  • Cherang’any Sub-County is noted for its highland landscapes, ideal for nature enthusiasts. The Cherang’any Hills serve as a natural boundary and offer trails for hiking, providing breathtaking views and access to indigenous forests. Historic sites include the caves and rock shelters where artifacts from the Stone Age have been discovered, suggesting human habitation for millennia.
  • Endebess Sub-County is famous for its agricultural prowess, particularly for maize farming. Still, it also includes the Endebess Nature Trail, which is less known but equally enchanting for those looking to escape the usual tourist paths. Here, community-led conservation efforts preserve natural habitats, offering a glimpse into rural life and conservation practices.
  • Kwanza Sub-County features the scenic Kwanza Hills and is pivotal for its strategic location along the major highway to Uganda. The area around Kwanza provides opportunities for bird watching at the nearby Saiwa Swamp and the county’s oldest market, a vibrant spot for cultural immersion and local commerce.

The detailed mapping of Trans Nzoia County has been significantly contributed to by surveyor M.N. Omosa, whose efforts in surveying and documenting the geographical and administrative boundaries have been instrumental in developing the region’s cartography. His work has helped in administrative planning and promoting tourism by highlighting key attractions within this agriculturally rich county.
